Modern Shelf With Hand Cut Dovetails

I will occasionally deviate from the easily recognized pieces of furniture for a more abstract form like this modern shelf.  The Dovetail Shelf is one such piece.  The use as shelf does not offer me as much structure as a table, chair or bench so I am forced deep into my style to create meaning.  The dovetail component angles and pushes off the wall in a very unusual way.  The useable shelf then pushed to the right to balance the composition.  I find the challenge of not going too far while creating meaning  a worthwhile exercise to keep me sharp.  When I go back to my comfort zone of subjects with a more recognizable form I always find that I am better off for having tried to compose without that guidance for one piece.
